The UK cover for my novel, Sandman Slim. Out June 7th from Voyager UK.

When I read Sandman Slim, I was hooked by the end of the first page. It’s a fantastic book, and Kadrey is a fantastic writer.

All, righty.  I love a good recommendation.  It’s on my library booklist.

Giles is without a doubt my favourite character. But there’s a small part of me which has never quite forgiven him for siding with the others in ‘Empty Places’, and throwing Buffy out of her own house. It just seemed so completely un-Giles like and made no sense to me. So I’ve decided to just blame the writers instead.

Like so much in later seasons Buffy and Angel, this is what must be done.  I still love the show but sometimes you just have to admit that what the writer wants is in opposition to what the writer has established and they’re doing it anyway, even if you’d rather they not.  [Which is sort of a reminder to myself to keep an eye on me and just admit when I’ve outsmarted myself and go back, rather than a “lecture” on anything.]

I hate that Buffy didn’t get paid for being a slayer yet Giles got a wage for being her watcher. She was putting her life on the line and didn’t get a single dime, that really pissed me off.

Always annoyed me, too.  I guess, theoretically, the Watcher is supposed to be providing support (financial as well as educational) for “his” Slayer, but… that didn’t seem to bear out in practice, did it?  It wasn’t too clear with the Potentials in S7.  And Giles LEFT when Buffy needed financial and emotional support the most.  I saw his point, but he could have fronted her a check on a monthly basis or something.  The Slayer is, generally, a minor, so…that… but it’s somewhat hinky.  All ties into how they see The One Girl as a tool and not a person.

One of the best moments of the entire season 3 is when Cordelia Chase stakes her first vampire.

I LOVED that.  This reminds me, though, that vampires as a race seem to suffer from a congenital weakness in their chest area.  Staking for everyone (powers or no) is WAY too easy, not saying it’s easy, just easier than it ought to be.  Do they ever talk about that among themselves?  Consider wearing chest armor?

Canadian scientists identify two new species of dinosaurs that could help fill in evolutionary gapsA team of five Canadian scientists has identified two new species of dinosaurs from the famous fossil beds of southern Alberta, including one that points to the pivotal North American evolution of a family of pint-sized, plant-eating creatures related to the triceratops. So, the Triceratops is a thing again?  I thought they took it away from us, saying it was, in fact, two species of other dinosaur.  I accept your apology, sciencists.
